The thyroid gland is present at the neck and wraps around the front of the trachea. It is an endocrine gland. Several hormones are produced by the thyroid gland that has very important roles in controlling bodily functions. Metabolism, body temperature, mood, etc are regulated by the secretions of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland continuously communicates with the brain to achieve a state of hormonal homeostasis. The condition in which an elevated level of thyroid hormones is present is called hyperthyroidism and the condition in which low thyroid hormones are present is called hypothyroidism.

The endocannabinoid system or ECS consists of cannabinoid receptors and various other receptors. ECS highly influences the production of various hormones in the thyroid gland. Thyroid glands have a significant concentration of cannabinoid receptors. The hormones produced in the body bind with these cannabinoid receptors to induce many biological processes and mood changes.

Cannabidiol (CBD) which is obtained from the cannabis sativa plant targets ECS. Symptoms of thyroid disorder are depression, inflammation, anxiety, weight gain, etc. Many studies open up the possibility of reducing the intensity of these symptoms by using CBD-based medicines. The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is a region in the brain that is responsible for stimulating the pituitary gland for the production of various thyroidal hormones. PVN also has a noticeable number of cannabinoid receptors. Also, it is found that CBD can engage with these receptors. This interaction of CBD with PVN shows potential for balancing thyroid hormone levels.

A large number of people with thyroid disorders have problems with their metabolism and have low energy levels. Cannabidiol interacts with the ECS which can improve energy levels. Moreover, CBD is also found effective in regulating disrupted metabolism.

Two types of fat cells found in our body are white fat cells and brown fat cells. Brown fat cells are more efficient than white fat cells when it is converted into energy. Converting white fat cells to brown fat cells is known as Fat-Browning. It is found that cannabidiol improves the fat-browning effect, which ultimately helps in burning more calories.

CBD-based drugs for thyroid disorders are opening up a different approach to maintaining adequate levels of thyroid hormones. Still, lots of research and studies have to be done to know all about the interaction of CBD. Consuming both prescription drugs and CBD-based drugs together can become toxic. Also, the drugs may react with each other and may produce toxic by-products. So it is always better to consult with a doctor before taking CBD-based drugs.
